Thomas E. Zewert, M. D., Ph.D. – Harvard Trained, Board Certified
Plastic Surgeon
Dr.
Zewert combines his life-long passion for artistry, medicine, and
science to help cosmetic surgery patients reveal their inner
beauty. Originally from New York State, Dr. Zewert attended Yale
University graduating magna cum laude with both a B.S. and an
accelerated M.S.
Before heading to medical school, he received a Ph.D. in chemistry
and biophysics at the California Institute of Technology where he
later sat on the faculty. While at Caltech Dr. Zewert invented
several materials that are more like the body's own tissue (more
natural) than implants (for example, breast, facial, and body)
that are presently used. He hopes one day that these materials
will, after further refinement, become widely available. More
recently, Dr. Zewert has had several patents approved for more
effective methods to treat skin, and he continues his work in this
area along with his collaborators at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (M.I.T.) and Harvard.
Dr.
Zewert received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and
thereafter completed an integrated residency in Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center.
Dr.
Zewert has extensive experience in cosmetic and reconstructive
surgery, and his practice involves both because he believes that a
surgeon cannot truly be a master at one without practicing the
other. (Both types of plastic surgery combine the artistic
challenge and satisfaction of helping patients.) Further, Dr.
Zewert does not limit his cosmetic surgery to one specific area of
the body as he feels that a well-trained plastic surgeon can and
should offer a holistic, comprehensive array of services. Dr.
Zewert considers it an extreme privilege to practice medicine and
plastic surgery in particular.
Dr.
Zewert routinely publishes articles and gives lectures at national
meetings on plastic surgery topics such as new techniques in
facial surgery and body contouring. He has performed several
hundred body contouring procedures on some of the most difficult
patients that plastic surgeons face- those who have lost a
significant amount of weight and now have loose and excessive skin
and fat. He feels a special satisfaction in helping people with
weight problems because of the potential psychological and overall
health benefits he has seen achieved with weight reduction
surgery.
