Tom Zewert:  I think the thing that most people get out of liposuction is that there’s one part of their body where there’s a pooch or some fat that no matter what they do they can’t get rid of that fat. And liposuction will allow you to get rid of that fat with minimal down time, the least amount of pain, the smallest incision.  That’s the benefit of liposuction.  We do a full evaluation, but usually it’s pretty straight forward. If the patient has the appropriate skin quality, then we mark out the areas that need to be reduced.  What I do is I draw a topographic map basically centered around the area.  I make an incision here.  We go ahead and make the small incisions and the operative sweep and use the appropriate liposuction technique to achieve the best result. And this is actually, typically, the standard cannula that we use.  It’s a three millimeter blunt tip. It has a very blunt tip on it, so-- and it has the little suction holes here. When you remove the fat from that area, the patient will no longer preferentially gain fat in that area. So you can remove the fat. And even if the patient gained some weight in the future, it won’t come back nearly as much in that area. I also have my patients where compression garments, specially designed garments to reduce bruising and swelling after the procedure.  The patient recovers quickly and is usually back to work within a week.  Liposuction is conceptually a very straightforward procedure. But make no mistake about it you want the best possible trained surgeon doing it. There are risks.  And it’s very, very important that your surgeon is aware and best trained to avoid and minimize any risk and it’s done in the safest, possible setting.
